In this episode of the Dakar Documentary I showcase the importance of skill and training in off-road motorcycle racing, emphasizing that money alone cannot make you a fast rider. I highlight how motorsports put everyone on the same level, where the rider’s abilities matter more than the machine.
For 2024, I chose motocross as the primary training method to regain speed and improve reflexes after my bad knee injury. Motocross is ideal because the track conditions change constantly, forcing riders to adapt and improve reaction times. It also helps develop overtaking skills, which are useful in rally racing but most of all having only a few months for training there was no other solution.
Working with the media and as a test rider for motorcycle companies allows me to earn money while gaining access to tracks and top-tier equipment which is really great also for training..
A fundamental part of training is keeping track of progress, keeping lap times, and having a training partner for feedback. During this period I started also testing energy gels to determine which products could work best for my body during long races like the Dakar Rally. Furthermore I decided to create my own line of energy supplements for endurance races and Adventure Riding.
Off-road racing truly requires a lot of discipline, not just in training but also in maintaining the bike and equipment. Finally, the financial challenge of participating in the Dakar Rally is definitely the most demanding part which I will cover in future.
